The original temple was built by Hoysala kings in the 12th century. Later the tower of the temple was built by Vijayanagara kings in the 17th century. A flight of one thousand steps was built to the top of the hill from the bottom in the year 1659. There is a huge Nandi at 800th step. Nandi is the bull mount of Shiva. It has the dimension of 24feet length and 15feet hight. It has delicately carved bells around its neck

Chamundi hills is around 12 kms from Mysore city. If you are looking just to visit temple and come back, you can avail our 4 hours, 40 kms package. You can even cover the Nandi on the way back from Chamundi hills.
